Anan City has steadily developed as a central city in southern Tokushima Prefecture since it became a municipality in Showa 33 (1958). On March 20, 2006, a new Anan City was born by combining with the nearby towns of Nakagawa and Hanoura. These two towns have been deeply connected politically, economically, and culturally since times past and I believe it is a significant and joyous occasion to have reached an amalgamation settlement.
Though the names of Nakagawa Town and Hanoura Town as local governments may have disappeared, the livelihood, history and culture manifested in each will never disappear. I eagerly look forward to creating a relationship in which we enhance one another by shifting the local pride of each area into a whole new pride in Anan.
Currently, local administrations are navigating the new challenges that have emerged in recent time such as a declining birthrate, a growing proportion of elderly citizens, advancing globalization and adjusting to the age of information. In addition, there is an urgent need for self-reliance in local administration that has been brought on by the national reforms for decentralization, including measures to decease national expenses. However, I believe this is a great opportunity for this new city to move forwards. I will strive to create "a new Anan City", full of dreams and hopes, with citizens working hand in hand more than ever before, through flexible and appropriate administration policies.
